An important appointment for the water sector took place this month, the Water Festival (8-11 October 2017 – University of Bari) during which delicate but pressing issues were discussed, including climate change that alternating between extreme and dangerous situations. We are referring in particular to the succession of seasons in which drought increases the problems of water scarcity, while sudden and concentrated rainfall causes damage to agriculture and sometimes even to people.
Drought is no longer to be considered an exceptional topic, but is becoming increasingly urgent and requires investments that we would never have thought of making 10 years ago. The Deputy Minister of Economy Enrico Morando explained, on the second day of work, that public intervention combined with private investments is necessary to ensure that Italy can fill the gap in production capacity that has accumulated during the recession of recent years.
The deputy minister also explains that Italian water companies, at the moment, can count on one of the strongest investment incentives compared to their European colleagues, funding which however is not unlimited. Therefore, it is necessary for companies to continue on the path they have taken and continue to ask for coordinated policies and a National Strategy on which to merge projects and funding.
In our small way what we can do is advise our customers to invest in technology capable of maximizing water consumption for agriculture (for example drip irrigation systems) hoping that the incentives in this sector will help, as he observes the vice president of Utilitalia, Mauro D’Ascenzi, perhaps with agreements between banks or with funds.
